August Was Brutal for Tech Writers on Medium
The new earnings calculation has been a nightmare for tech writers on the platform
Ouch ..
That is all I can say If you were a tech writer on Medium in August 2023
The changes that Medium has rolled out to its Partner Program have not gone well with tech writers to say the least
Most have seen their earnings decimated by over 70 to 80% !!
In the new program, earnings are calculated via a complex mixture of read time, caps, highlights + the number of people who followed you as a result
Especially problematic has been the 30 second rule i.e. if readers move away before 30 seconds on your story then the writer’s earnings actually get penalized
I have seen my own stats drastically drop and views which were average over a 1000+ daily are now struggling to stay above 300
Medium is pivoting more towards personal stories and away from tech content which is seriously short-sighted in my opinion
